Voodoo Doughnut Brings Kooky Fried Dough to Universal CityWalk

Voodoo Doughnut, the Portland brand from Kenneth “Cat Daddy” Pogson and Tres Shannon, brings kooky fried dough creations to Universal CityWalk.

Los Angeles has more donut shops than any other American city—more than 2,000—but to date we’ve never had an option as kooky or risqué as Voodoo Doughnut. The Portland-based concept from Kenneth “Cat Daddy” Pogson and Tres Shannon dates to 2003 and has branches in cities like Austin, Denver and Taipei. The opening of the Universal CityWalk location this fall marks their California debut.

According to Pogson, “Our signature and one-of-a-kind doughnuts are the perfect complement to CityWalk’s over-the-top vibrancy.” Their signature chocolate doughnut resembles a voodoo doll and features a pretzel through its chest, revealing raspberry jelly filling. The pentagram-patterned Diablos Rex and the Maple Blazer blunt—designed to resemble a pot cigarette—are similarly outlandish. Options like Mexican hot chocolate, blueberry cake and maple bacon doughnuts are completely tame by comparison.

Voodoo Doughnut will reside near the “5 Towers” outdoor concert stage on Universal CityWalk, near the entrance to AMC Universal CityWalk 19 cinemas and not far from LudoBird, the fast-casual fried chicken concept from acclaimed Chef Ludovic “Ludo” Lefebvre. The arrival of this Portland import helps punctuate a banner year on the hill, which also saw the rise of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Hollywood theme park.
