The Hospital of the Future

Providence and Cedars-Sinai expand health care in the San Fernando Valley.

Providence St. Joseph Health has joined forces with Cedars-Sinai, a distinguished academic medical center, to create a center of high-quality medical care, exceptional patient experience and expanded specialty programs and services here in the Tarzana community. Formerly known as Providence Tarzana Medical Center, the medical center’s new name will be Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center and will offer expanded hospital services, as well as other specialty programs such as cancer, neurosciences, orthopedics and women’s services.

Providence St. Joseph Health is a national, not-for-profit Catholic health system that includes 51 hospitals, 829 physician clinics, senior services and supportive housing across seven states. The organization has 13 hospitals in Los Angeles, Orange and San Bernardino counties.

By combining the resources and talent of the two organizations, the partnership provides access to high-quality care during every phase of the healing process and enhances the continuum of care offered throughout the area. “Our joint vision is driven by a dedication to provide residents of the San Fernando Valley with convenient access to an expert community of physicians who deliver the highest-quality clinical care,” says Thomas M. Priselac, president and CEO of Cedars-Sinai, which is renowned for developing new approaches to medical treatment, education and research. “We’re delighted that this partnership will have such a meaningful impact on the health of our region.”

Through the joint venture, Providence and Cedars-Sinai will continue to operate as separate, independent health care organizations. Both will maintain their distinct identities and respect one another’s philosophy of health care practices.

Providence will retain controlling interest in the medical center and will have primary responsibility for operational oversight, subject to input by Cedars-Sinai. The employment of hospital staff who provide services on behalf of Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center will not be affected by the joint venture, and there will be no change for the physicians on staff. Children’s Hospital Los Angeles will continue to oversee the hospital neonatal ICU, pediatric ICU and general pediatrics programs and will make leading pediatric specialists available to patients.

The senior leadership team at Providence Tarzana will remain, and Dale Surowitz will continue to serve as chief executive. The hospital will have a new fiduciary board with representatives from both Providence and Cedars-Sinai, and several board subcommittees will review and oversee hospital areas such as quality, finance and construction.

While Cedars-Sinai is a Jewish hospital, Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center will retain its Catholic identity while embracing the diversity of all faiths. The hospital will continue to support patients by offering services in both Jewish and Catholic faith traditions.

As the medical center continues to embrace changes for the good of patients and the community, it will embark on and complete exciting new enhancements across the Tarzana campus—supported by both Providence and Cedars-Sinai. Redevelopment includes a new patient care tower with all-private rooms, an expanded emergency department, new diagnostic and treatment services, and enhanced outpatient and ambulatory services. The upgrades are scheduled to be complete in two years, making the new hospital a destination medical center for the area.

The Reimagined Project will continue to raise funds for the new patient care tower. As part of the joint venture, Cedars-Sinai also will invest in the Reimagined Project.
