    Women of the Valley

Gail Salem has worked in real estate for nearly 20 years. She graduated with a BFA in theatre arts from the University of Miami and worked in New York City on soap operas and in theatre. An acting opportunity then brought her to Los Angeles—and she fell in love with the city. Today she is married, has two sons and four grandchildren. She supports clients through Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Realty.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice I received was from my mother. She owned a lingerie shop and worked long hours but always managed to make it seem easy. Her advice was old-school: Always treat clients with care and respect. Your day is finished when the job is done. Don’t take life so seriously. Enjoy what you do and keep a sense of humor. She also told me to find a husband!

How do you balance work time and playtime?

I tend to work hard, and I like having a schedule and systems in place. However, in real estate the best plans can change at a moment’s notice. Staying focused and getting back on track is challenging. It takes discipline and a passion for what you do. A nonnegotiable is my morning cardio kickboxing class, which I do several times a week. My mind and body function better after a great workout. Friday afternoons are dedicated to my grandkids; they bring so much love and joy into my life!

What steps do you take to ensure your business is successful?

Never stop learning! The world is changing so fast. As Realtors it is important to keep up on the newest market trends and understand everything involved in each transaction. I am hands-on with my clients every step of the way—so much so that I miss speaking with them every day when the transaction is over. I keep up with the latest marketing and advertising trends to get the best exposure for the homes I am selling. Surrounding myself with a support staff of professionals who hold the same work ethic and standards is a must!

Describe a recent happening that restored your faith in humanity.

Recently a young couple was referred to me by a former client to find their first home. They had been working from home during the pandemic in a small rental along with their lovable Labrador. The market was hot with multiple offers, and they had a VA loan due to the husband’s years of serving in the military. We lost out on several homes, but we persevered. They closed on a lovely home on a tree-lined street with plenty of room and a yard for their pup!
