If you haven’t heard, “unicorn poop” is all the rage these days, which is why we’re excited about Sherman Oaks’ new bakery, Crème Caramel LA.  Owner, Kristine de la Cruz, seems to have quite an aversion to anything ordinary, and we’re just fine with that.  Bread pudding is constructed with peanut butter cups or pretzel sticks; biscuits are baked with Chinese sausage and scallions; cuts of Spanish omelets come punched up with bacon and parmesan.  The eponymous dish—a Filipino-influenced French custard—is offered in a kaleidoscope of renditions such as one inspired by Mexican Hot Chocolate, amped with the heat of a ghost pepper, and another made with tequila and salted caramel.  Then there’s the fist-sized meringue dusted with colorful sprinkles, better known as “unicorn poop.”  Part dessert shop, part bakery and sandwich shop, Crème Caramel LA is the neighborhood gem that’s about as unique and rare as, dare we say it?  A unicorn.

Crème Caramel LA, 14849 Burbank Blvd., Sherman Oaks, CA 91411. (818) 949-8352.
